I was sad to hear that Hani has passed on - when I joined the ESC in 1947 aged 8, he became my first real school friend until we returned to the UK in 1951. I visited his house on several occasions, and met his family. First friendships stay in the memory, and he seemed such a nice sort of person, who stood out from the others in some way. I have old photos somewhere of one of our classes, one with Mr Mansour in the gym hall, and another of us working in the form classroom...Hani is in both of these I think, but not very recognisable as I think they were taken for a school prospectus. I know we were both only young boys, but early impressions stay with you for life, and I was proud to have been one of his early friends, even though in later life we lost contact. If the Internet had been invented in 1950, this might not have happened!
