Remembering German bombers over Suez (1941?) |
by william penna |
Yes, I remember that occasion very well. I was only 14 or so at the time, and I was so scared that my teeth were chattering uncontrollably at one point. We had a very good view of the harbour, and one of the ships that we saw bombed and set on fire was the Georgic, a passenger ship converted for wartime use and carrying British families and, ironically, Italian prisoners-of- war. It eventually sank in shallow water in Suez Bay. Subsequently, the ship was raised and underwent extensive repair, and then used to transport troops for the remainder of the war. |
